Brie Larson’s ‘The Marvels’ has soared to new heights, becoming the costliest production in Marvel’s Phase 5 lineup. The film’s budget has skyrocketed well beyond its initial estimate of $140 million, reaching a staggering $270 million, as confirmed by Disney in a recent Forbes article.
Milestone
This financial revelation marks a significant milestone, surpassing the budgets of other notable projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 5. ‘The Marvels’ now stands as the most expensive film among its Phase 5 counterparts, including ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ ($200 million), ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ ($250 million USD), and even the Disney+ series ‘Secret Invasion’ ($212 million).
Subsidy
A major contributing factor to this hefty budget is the $55 million subsidy provided by the U.K. government for the production of ‘The Marvels.’ However, even after factoring in the subsidy, the film’s budget still remains an impressive $219.8 million.
To break even, ‘The Marvels’ would need to gross a minimum of $439.6 million. This financial target presents a challenge, particularly considering the hurdles faced by other MCU films, such as ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ at the box office.
‘The Marvels’ serves as the sequel to ‘Captain Marvel’ and picks up the story where Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers left off after the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ The film features ‘WandaVision’ actress Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and ‘Ms. Marvel’ star Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan.
Marvel Film
Directed by Nia DaCosta, ‘The Marvels’ not only connects with the Ms. Marvel TV show but also serves as a pivotal link to future MCU films. Nia DaCosta, breaking barriers in the American film industry, became the first and youngest African-American woman to helm a Marvel film.
The cast of ‘The Marvels’
The cast of ‘The Marvels’ also includes Samuel L. Jackson, Zawe Ashton, and Park Seo-Joon in significant roles. The film revolves around Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau embarking on a cosmic quest to save the world, all while their powers become inexplicably intertwined. The question remains: will they be able to untangle this power mix-up in time to save the day?
Indian audiences can catch ‘The Marvels’ in theaters this Diwali on November 10, with screenings available in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. It’s worth noting that the film will go head-to-head at the box office with Salman Khan’s ‘Tiger 3,’ which marks a significant release in Indian cinemas as it reunites the superstar with Shah Rukh Khan in the next installment of the YRF spy universe franchise.
